Local Coin Shops
The type of coin dealer that most of us visualize when we thing of a coin dealer is customarily the local coin shop-a storefront retail business that deals directly with the public.
Thousands of such shops exist across America; hardly a town in the country exists that doesn't have a coin shop in it. These businesses are longstanding members of their communities and thus their ethical standards tend to be very high. They have often spent whole lifetimes developing reputations for trustworthiness and integrity.
This does not, however, mean that your local coin shop is necessarily the best choice for every investor and collector-at least not for every transaction. Local coin shops do not typically have access to inventories of the rarest and finest coins, both due to limited resources and because they deal with everyone from the 10 year old boy down the street to the widow who came across her late husband's coin collection in the attic.
Still, it usually makes sense to establish a relationship with a local coin shop. They can be good sources of objective advice and other items related to numismatics, such as books and periodicals with which you can learn more to make informed investing and collecting decisions.
